Welding Symbols – An Introduction to Reading Drawings

Welding and Fabrication

Welding is a major process which is involved in almost all fabrication industries, from general structures to aerospace fabrication.

Importance of Fabrication Drawings

The fabrication drawings includes welding symbols, which directs the fabricators. Provides information like What kind of bevel should be prepared for welding ? What is the size of weld to be welded in the case of filler or partial penetration joints ?

How do you read welding symbols?

Weld symbols sometimes also gives additional information such as Which process should be used for welding. What NDT method to be utilized to check the soundness of weld . These additional data are described in the tail portion of the symbol.

How many different welding symbols are there?

There are two major standards for weld symbols AWS A2.4 (American Standard) and BS EN 2554 ( British Standard) . The major difference between the American and British Standard are given below * The American weld arrow head will not have dashed reference line instead will have a single reference line ,in which arrow side bevel is represented down side and the other side bevel is represented on the top side. British Standard arrow head will have additional dashed line , where arrow side bevel is mentioned on reference line and dashed reference line represents the other side
